#ShareSavvy Saturday is an event held annually on the first Saturday of August. The event promotes positive social media usage to protect species vulnerable to exploitation on social media, and invites organisations, institutions and charities to join in tackling this ever-growing issue.
The first #ShareSavvy Saturday was held at Battersea Park Children's Zoo as well as several other zoos across the UK. Participants delivered on-site activities including workshops, educational stalls, poster walls and fundraising activities for charities who support species affected by social media.
At Battersea there was an excellent public turn out, enabling many positive conversations to be had with visitors. All of the daily keeper talks involved a section about #ShareSavvy, and two extra, free educational workshops were held for visitors, specifically about how to navigate social media in a #ShareSavvy way. The also zoo raised money for Cikananga, an Indonesian charity working to rescue, rehab and release animals poached for the pet trade.
Visitors to Battersea Park Children’s Zoo were given a questionnaire on entry to the zoo, and asked to complete it before they started their visit. They were then asked on leaving to fill out the same questions. They were asked to describe the images below in 3 words.
The results of a very small scale survey show the impact that one day of focussed education can have on the opinions of an organisation’s visitors. Bringing to attention the impact photos on social media can have on wild populations is so important for ongoing conservation efforts and collaborative campaigns such as this are essential for success.
The next #ShareSavvy Saturday is soon approaching. Make sure you're part of it.
